The St. Leonard’s Parish Guatemala Mission Group, rooted in the vibrant community of Boston’s North End, is a dedicated charitable organization committed to uplifting the lives of children at Valley of the Angels in Guatemala. Inspired by the legacy of two hardworking Franciscan priests, this group embodies a mission of hope, dignity, and love for some of the most underprivileged children in the region.
The Valley of the Angels was founded in 1993 by Padre Rocco “Papa” Famiglietti, a Franciscan priest from the Immaculate Conception Province in Medford. Padre Rocco’s dream was to create a sanctuary for children—a place where they could not only survive but thrive. His vision was far more ambitious than simply providing shelter; it was about affirming the dignity of every child.
With superior materials, innovative architectural designs, and a pristine location that celebrated the beauty of God’s creation, Padre Rocco built an environment that fostered hope and inspiration. The sanctuary initially welcomed about 38 orphans, providing them with a safe home, access to education, and comprehensive care for their medical, psychological, and dental needs.
In 2008, Fr. Michael Della Penna, a young Franciscan priest from Boston’s North End, succeeded Padre Rocco in leading the Valley of the Angels. Over the next 11 years, Fr. Michael expanded the mission’s reach, opening the school to all children in the community and extending its curriculum to the 11th grade. His work helped transform the sanctuary into a thriving center of learning, spiritual growth, and community support. This included opening a bakery, mission housing and the Angels garden.
Today, the St. Leonard’s Parish Guatemala Mission Group is honored to continue this extraordinary legacy in support of Fr. Joachim, the new director of Valley. The group provides ongoing support to the 200 children at Valley of the Angels, ensuring they have access to education, healthcare, and spiritual guidance. Beyond the walls of the Valley, the mission group extends its outreach to families and individuals in troubled and unsafe areas of Guatemala, embodying the Franciscan values of compassion and service.
The group’s commitment is unwavering: to bring light and hope to those in need, honoring the dream of Padre Rocco. Through their efforts, the mission group not only sustains a sanctuary of hope but also inspires others to join in this vital work.
The mission of the St. Leonard’s Parish Guatemala Mission Group relies on the generosity of donors and volunteers. Whether through financial support, prayers, or hands-on assistance, there are many ways to be part of this transformative mission. Together, we can continue to nurture the seeds of hope planted by Padre Rocco ensuring that the children of Valley of the Angels and beyond have a future filled with promise and opportunity.
